One of Shahn’s most enduring subjects was prompted by the arrest, trial, and execution of Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti. Sacco, a shoemaker, and Vanzetti, a fish seller, were accused of murdering two men during an armed robbery at a factory in Braintree, Massachusetts in 1920.

The material in the Sacco-Vanzetti Trial Newspaper Clippings dates between April and November of 1927. While the collection primarily consists of newspaper clippings, there is also one letter from H. Vanzetti went on trial first, for the Bridgewater robbery. (Sacco could not be tried for this crime because he could prove that he was at work when it occurred.) 

Many people felt that the trial had been unfair and that the two men had been convicted for their radical anarchist beliefs. Learn more about the pair and their trial in this article. Vanzetti was tried first in the summer of 1920 on the lesser of the two chargers, the failed Bridgewater robbery. Despite a strong alibi supported by many witnesses, Venzetti was found guilty. Most of Vanzetti's witnesses were Italians who spoke English poorly, and their trial testimony, given largely in translation, failed to convince the American jury.
